What is tutoring and who is a tutor? Why would anyone need a tutor?
According to Wikipedia, “Tutoring is academic support provided by a master teacher; someone with deep knowledge or defined expertise in a particular subject or set of subjects”.
“A tutor, formally also called an academic tutor, is a person who provides assistance or tutelage to one or more people on certain subject areas or skills. The tutor spends a few hours on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis to transfer their expertise on the topic or skill to the student”.
If last year and this year have taught us anything, it’s that if you have a child who is still going through school or college or university then you are going to need more help with home schooling and getting a Tutor is really a great idea.
I had a chance of catching up with a high-profile Chemistry Tutor, Dr Cristina Gherasim based in Maastricht, The Netherlands, to find out how this COVID Home schooling situation has affected her as a Tutor and what sort of students she has been able to help over this period.
Here’s what she shared with me.
Dr Cristina has been a teaching for over 20yrs, she is highly skilled and highly qualified Chemistry teacher with a PhD, BSc and MSc in Chemistry.
I was interested in finding out how she has managed through this pandemic to teach her students online and still help them high grades. Dr Cristina explained that she has used Zoom like most of other businesses throughout 2020 to date but has appreciated the flexibility of being able to bring a top- notch education to students in the comfort of their homes at a time that suits them too. She uses online teaching tools such as whiteboards, online quizzes and assignments which have really helped her provide the best learning experience during the students’ lessons, online assignments and tests.
Dr Cristina teaches US high school students and also provide Private Tuition to US Home Schoolers using a full curriculum prepared by her with systematic evaluation and grading. This helps her students improve their grades and understand all the Chemistry concepts so they can achieve straight A’s. She teaches 15 - 19 year olds from regular High school to First year College Chemistry students and she specialises in US curriculums for Regular High School Chemistry, Honours Chemistry, AP Chemistry, College Prep Chemistry, Gen Chem 1, Gen Chem 2, Organic Chemistry 1 and UK curriculums (GCSE, IGCSE and A-level chemistry).
As a Tutor, it’s very important to Dr Cristina that her students understand well the Chemistry subject rather than just skim over topics to pass. She wants them to grasp the Chemistry concepts so they can achieve solid knowledge, get top grades and apply what they have learnt to further their studies in Chemistry and follow their dream careers in Science, Med school and engineering.
In order to achieve this highly dedicated way of teaching, Dr Cristina developed a special and effective Chemistry teaching technique over 20yrs called the “GET 10 METHOD”.
In this technique, she finds out what the student’s biggest struggle is in Chemistry, then develops a tailor-made effective teaching technique to suit the student’s needs and help them master every chemistry concept and get on track with their studies enabling them to get top grades.
Sounds like a really hard job being a Tutor but there are dedicated Tutors such as Dr Cristina who are really committed to see students succeed, get confident in their chosen area of study and follow their dream careers.
If you know anyone who needs a Chemistry Tutor to improve their grades or master the concepts of Chemistry, Dr Cristina Gherasim can help them achieve their goals and pursue their dreams in Science, Med school and Engineering.
